Education is a seed, not a machine to be tinkered with by Rube Goldberg engineers intent on complicating common sense propositions about what it takes to learn. So the controlling question that shapes American and western education is this: is education a living thing, a sentient being, or is it set of processes that can be objectively manipulated, measured and therefore used to determine the worth of a product and its processes?
At any early age children learn that seeds seldom grow on sidewalks, so they are wise to seek soil for their seeds. Why? The soil has nutrients. It is hooked into an eco-system in which sets of relationships exist as a matter of course. What? Are you saying that there are enduring aspects of the human mind-body-soul in which learning flourishes more naturally than in others? That is exactly what I am saying—which is why sane mothers do not turn their sons and daughters over to wolves to raise.
Yet, our educational system has arrested Love, and placed Common-Sense on probation. No wonder our educational system is such a cold, hard place. And no wonder that seeds don’t grow there. No wonder that so few children learn there.
More later….
